I don't doubt that.

Yes, people like "templates" to avoid such a problem.

I know that I sounded a bit weird when I was talking about perceived
usefulness; what I was trying to say was that, based on my experience,
I don't know many developers that would go for this, and that it sounds
like something that could be acheived (in essence) using a few lines of
PHP code. I know that writing an extension will make it faster (probably
not that much, to be honest), but aside from that, it feels a bit like
overkill.
So, *my* perceived usefulness of SQLHat isn't particularly high.
I was tempted to call a vote, but remembered what I've said on this
list in the past.
So, rather than call a vote, I'm not going to say anything about this
extension except for this:
Have a go at writing the extension, feel free to ask questions about
that here. When you're done, compare how well it works to the PHP
class library, do a couple of benchmarks and so on. If you're still
sure that the extension really is worth your time to maintain, and
that other people will really get a lot of mileage out of it, then we
can put it into PECL.

The PHP license is the "best" as far as we are concerned; please
take a look at the pecl-dev archives for more information about
licensing.
