fileinfo 0.1 problem

After using pear to install fileinfo-0.1 on linux 2.4.25, php 4.3.6, I get the following error in my logs: May 1 00:52:21 pozzo php: PHP Warning: Unknown(): Invalid library (maybe not a PHP library) 'fileinfo.so' in Unknown on line 0 My phpinfo() does not show this extension, and my Horde test.php output complains about its absence. I believe my setup is ok as I installed the pam_auth extension immediately after trying unsuccessfully to get fileinfo working.
