Hi,
I have had serious problems (and still having some problems) installing PHP with
php_imagick + ImageMagick (under both Linux and Win32). I did not find any good
documentation on setting this up, so I thought I'd share. People that have
php_imagick working, PLEASE share any thoughts you have. Read below.
First, here are details of Linux configuration that *WORKED* for me (others didn't
work - I've tried many):
- Apache 1.3.29 + mod_ssl 2.8.16-1.3.29 (I guess, doesn't matter)
- PHP 4.3.6 (I guess, doesn't matter)
- ImageMagick 5.5.7-20
- php_imagick 0.9.8 (0.9.9 did not work)
Here are details of Windows XP configuration that *WORKED* for me (others didn't
work - I've tried many):
- Apache 1.3.27 (I guess, doesn't matter)
- PHP 4.3.6 (I guess, doesn't matter)
- ImageMagick 5.5.7-Q16 (Q8 also worked, but with older php-imagick)
- php_imagick 0.9.8 (dll from Frank Kromann's site - thanks Frank)
Here are things that *DID NOT* work:
Linux:
- nothing worked with ImageMagick 6.0.1 - building errors
- php_imagick 0.9.9 + ImageMagick 5.5.7 didn't work - php_imagick functions
aren't returning resource identifier (returning boolean)
- I think that php_imagick 0.9.9 isn't working at all!
Windows XP:
- nothing worked with ImageMagick 6.0.1 - php_imagick needing nonexistent
functions from some ImageMagick CORE_* dll files.
- ImageMagick 5.5.7-Q8 didn't work with Frank's php-imagick 0.9.8 (worked with
older php-imagick from http://php.chregu.tv/php_imagick.dll
I think I tried more combinations under Windows and Linux, but none of them
worked :-)
Here are problems that I am still having under BOTH systems (but generally,
successful configuration above works - some demos are working - but I did not
try ALL of them):
resize.php (which is most important piece of functionality - resizing is most
requested feature for me) DOES NOT work, here are details
- Under Windows, default "resize.php" demo just hangs - PHP process eating lot
of memory and CPU. If I change "50, 50" to "700, 700", I get following:
imagick_resize() failed<BR>
Reason: PixelCacheIsNotOpen<BR>
Same situation under Linux. I don't remember what was default - "50, 50" or
"700, 700", but it either hangs or returns error above.
I did not try all demos, but many of them worked.
I suppose that there are problems with latest php_imagick (it does not work at
all! php_imagick functions return boolean instead of expected resource).
I think that in php_imagick should be mentioned that it does not work with
ImageMagick 6.0.1 yet.
I would like Frank to mention that his php_imagick.dll works only with 5.5.7-Q16
for now.
Does it make sense to try GraphicsMagick instead of ImageMagick? What will work
better?
Alex.
