smart string primer?

I'm having trouble understanding the nested thicket of macros and functions that constitute the smart string append functions. Are these documented anywhere? Is there any kind of guide or anything? I've managed to append some chars, but I'm trying to figure out how to append the bytes of a double (or perhaps a char array) to a smart string buffer.
