Note that you can already (since PHP 5.3.6) open an arbitrary file descriptor with the URL php://fd/<file description>. Trunk also has a new function in the sockets extension called socket_import_stream to import a stream as socket resource for use with the sockets extension. -- Gustavo Lopes
