building imagick fails every time?

Hi,
I've been trying unsuccessfully to build imagick on ubuntu with PHP
5.3.2 for over a year off and on, and have reached a point where I
absolutely need it to freakin build. The thing is looking for
libImath.la, but I only have libImath.a. Can ANYONE shed light on why I
get this error? I get it with both the latest stable and the new beta.
I also am unable to build imagick from source because of the exact same
*$(@#&**(& error. I realize this is not a pecl error, but I can't find
any resources or help from the ubuntu end, and hoped that someone on the
PHP end had encountered this before and could at least point me at a
solution.
