Hi I've posted the first version of the Windows installer at http://www.dialsolutions.com/phil/php/SETUP.EXE I've tested it here on IIS4/NT4 and PWS/Workstation and it seems to do the right things! What it does: Installs the files for the CGI version of PHP 4.0.3RC2 (including a 'restart' install of msvcrt.dll if necessary) Installs/edits php.ini Configures IIS/PWS What is doesn't do: Install any extension dlls Configure Apache or any other type of web server Install any test files - eg containing phpinfo() Although I had originally intended to install some extensions, I have not done this for now because: The setup.exe file gets very large very quickly! I could not keep up with the rate at which new extensions were being built, or incorporated into the main binary ;-) I would be happy to include a SMALL number of the most popular extensions if we can agree what they would be, but we shouldn't increase the size of the installer too much. There was some discussion a while back about whether php should be installed in C:\PHP or C:\Program Files\PHP. Because there was some doubt as to whether everything works ok with a space in the pathname, I've played safe and stuck with C:\PHP. If anyone would like to write the stuff to configure other web servers (Apache probably being the most important) what you need to do is write a program which takes as its command line arguments, the path to the php exe, the path to any special server configuration files (eg httpd.conf) if necessary, and a list of the file extensions to map (eg .php). The program should either configure the web server without user intervention if possible, or provide some user interface to select which nodes/virtual directories/websites to alter. Please contact me for more details. I would be very grateful if people could test the installer on a variety of platforms and configurations and report back.
