The problem on using system() and exec()

I have got a problem on using system() and exec() on linux.
system("/mmseg",$array,$val);
print $array[0];
print $val;
The program mmseg will return some lines to stdout,
but there is nothing printed on $array but it return 1 to $val.
it there any bugs on system() or exec() on linux??
if not how can I use it well??
