and try this:

ob_start("ob_gzhandler");
echo str_repeat('a',$a);
ob_end_flush();
-- end file gz.php ---
then telnet your server with:
GET /gz.php HTTP/1.0
Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate
or just set output_handler=ob_gzhandler and try to execute a page
