Obvisouly a long period is needed, but if handled right I think this is the
best way to go, it unclutters the namespace eventually and once depricated
we can forget about thinking about which alias goes where.
I can do the job, but lord knows how good it will be, my C aren't top notch
but I can handle replacing vars in a file on Windows, as for *nix or
anything else I have no idea if what I have (I wrote something similar a few
years ago) would compile on other platforms I don't know. I can do a nice
GUI for Windows if needed (VB) and put a web based version up too.
All I would need is the old name and the new name and away we go.

Nice idea, I guess you just volunteerd :) But I don't think we must
depreciate the old functions immediately, but have some sort of
transistion phase in which the old names are slowly removed.
