Ok I've tried the patch.
The improvement is significant in that it takes quite a few more pageviews
before php keels over. Previously it was likely to go wrong after 2 or 3
pages. I've just got a run of maybe 20 fairly complex pages before it went
into '500 error mode'. The characteristics of the failure are identical to
the one before the patch was applied.
