Hi,
Overall, it builds fine and works ok for me on various Unix platforms but
one.
Platform #1:
NetBSD 1.3.3 x86
gcc 2.7.2.2, default make, zlib 1.1.3
./configure --with-config-file-path=/space/www/etc/httpd/conf/php_cgi \
--enable-discard-path \
--with-gd=/u/guest/www/mbin/i386-NetBSD \
--with-mysql \
--enable-bcmath \
--with-dbase \
--with-zlib=/u/guest/www/mbin/i386-NetBSD \
--with-mcrypt=/u/guest/www/mbin/i386-NetBSD \
--enable-yp \
--with-mhash=/u/guest/www/mbin/i386-NetBSD \
--enable-ftp \
--enable-trans-sid \
--enable-sockets \
--enable-track-vars \
--enable-inline-optimization \
--with-jpeg-dir=/u/guest/www/mbin/i386-NetBSD \
--with-imap=/u/guest/www/mbin/i386-NetBSD/lib
Configuring php fails at zlib step:
[...]
configure:8473: checking if the location of ZLIB install directory is
defined
configure:8518: checking whether to include ZLIB support
configure:8714: checking for gzgets in -lz

configure:8729: Undefined symbol `_gzgets' referenced from text segment
configure: failed program was:

#include "confdefs.h"
/* Override any gcc2 internal prototype to avoid an error. */
/* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2
builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */
char gzgets();
int main() {
gzgets()
; return 0; }
[...]
Using PHP 4.0.5 on the same machine with the same script, config.log gives:

It seems like libtool forgets additional paths ?
Platform #2:
NetBSD 1.5 ELF x86
egcs 2.91.66, default make
./configure --with-config-file-path=/space/www/etc/httpd/conf/php_cgi \
--enable-discard-path \
--with-gd=/u/guest/www/mbin/emeri/i386-NetBSD \

--with-imap=/u/guest/www/mbin/emeri/i386-NetBSD/lib
Only warning:
dbug.c:325: warning: deprecated symbol "unix" is no longer predefined
Works fine in CGI mode using suEXEC with phpinfo() and my Webmail client so
far.
Platform #3 (build only):
Digital Alpha 4.0 878
gcc 2.7.2.3, default make
./configure
Only warnings:
Warning: EXPAT_INTERNAL_LIBADD changed after being used
Warning: EXPAT_INTERNAL_LIBADD changed after being used
Builds and runs in command-line fine: 'php -v' works.
Platform #4 (build only):
Linux 2.4.4
egcs 2.91.66, make 3.78.1
./configure --enable-inline-optimization --enable-sockets --enable-ftp
Builds fails with:

Platform #5 (build only):
OpenBSD 2.6 x86
gcc 2.95.1, default make
./configure --enable-inline-optimization --enable-sockets --enable-ftp
builds fine (no warning) and works in command line.
I don't know if 'make test' is relevant, here it is for this last machine:
Tests skipped: 69 ( 41%)
Tests failed: 11 ( 11%)
Tests passed: 90 ( 89%)
