persistent dba_popen not writing with Berkeley DB

I'm trying to write to Berkeley DB db2 files with PHP persistent connection
dba_popen.
When I try persistent connections with dba_open then I never get
insert/replace writes.
Without persistent connections writing work fine.
Has anyone else gotten persistent dba_popen connection writes working ?
