Hi, Phport is the prototype of an idea that I had in mind for serveral months now. It is derived from the FreeBSD Ports[1]-System. The goal was to simplify QA for PHP. Two types of QA are the daily build and smoke test [2] and the regression test, wich is especially important during the pre-release (RC) phase. Althoug it is one og PHP's strengths, it is really hard to provide serious QA for the zillions of configuration options/ini switches (hi andi ;)/libraries and webservers that PHP supports. Out of the box phport can build three types of PHP: - cvs. A current CVS checkout (ZE2 optional) - snap. The latest PHP 4 snapshot from [3] or a given package (supports ftp/http and filesystem) - local. A local copy of the PHP source tree By default a simple ./configure is used for building. One can specify configure options in etc/configure-options (relative to phport.sh). Phport parses this file (one option per line) to check the options for dependencies. If none is found the option is added to the ./configure line. It something is found. phport tries to solve this dependency by seeking its einvironment for the required library/webserver. If none is ofund either, phport tries to download and install it locally (inside the phport dircetory tree). If all dependencies are solved PHP is ./configured with the options and apropriate paths, then build. The PHP test cases, which need to be extended to test the various SAPIs, is run against this local build. The results are emailed to the current user. For now, everything except dependency checking and solving works ;). I know, the larger part has to be done, but I follow the rule "release often, release early" here. I chose sh for two purposes: We can't assume a working PHP on every system until the CLI has taken world and education of myself. So this is my first "larger" project in shellscripting and any comment is apprechiated.
