Hi, maybe a warning should go into the docs about this. SIGUSR1 and SIGHUP are broken if php is compiled as DSO. The workaround is to compile it as a static module. The SIGUSR1 part is very dangerous, since every httpd child will try to get 100%CPU time, causing huge loads (seen a load of 110.7 myself). The extensions affected are gd and curl (actually the openssl part of it). Strangely enough - sablot would seem to be a candidate for the same issue, since it links with other extensions before linked into php, but isn't. Maybe there are some pointers there??

Nick, I compiled a cvs version of php-4.2.0 statically, with mod_perl, mod_gzip, all apache modules as DSO and gd/freetype compiled into php - iow enough reasons to cause conflicts :-). This works beautifully. Thanx for the tip. Even the SIGUSR1 works! Nick Wood said at 02:58 16-3-2002:
I can't remember which list it was on, but I read about BSDI having problems like this with all kinds of applications. It appears to be how BSDI handles shared libraries... Some form of internal counter when loading shared libraries isn't being updated correctly. I think dlopen and dlclose were listed as the culprits... The fix was to add -lz -lpng -lttf -lgd -etc..(whatever php uses) to apache. Seems like it would slow things down a little, so ultimately, my fix was to not use PHP as a DSO.

Hi Nick, I haven't had a fix, but maybe some additional information. I see the same happening with openssl. The common factor being, non-libtool compiled libraries. I compiled gd with libtool, as I mailed to the list and apparrently the freetype library is made with libtool if you don't use jam, but then there's still the system-supplied libpng. I have one apache running with gd, but without freetype, so I'm not sure it's freetype related, because it still has that problem. When I'm in the office I'll ktrace the httpd binary, SIGHUP it and check if there's anything interesting in the output. http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=14870 Did you ever figure out what caused this? I've narrowed it down to ttf... But haven't found a fix yet. Any help would be appreciated.
