Hi, just read it. Honestly, it was an easy read, which is a good thing.
Everything flowed really well. Yet, I've got a couple of comments.
You suggested there were 2 roles:
programmer
designer
I've never really found a full-time designer capable of grasping the
use of templates. I've either had to always create the templates from
work done by designers (that they do in their awful GUIs ) or the
company I was at had a "html" guy who was a translator between designer
and programmer.
I appreciate your description of a need for "presentation logic".
That is very, very true. BTW, I happen to be working on a system that
was written in Egrail and your example is exactly what I'm running into
where the business logic is nearly inextricably intertwined with the
presentation logic making it a bear to re-organize but such is my
current task.
I would suggest you put a subtitle (an attention grabber) called
"Business Logic and Presentation Logic" or similar for the section
where you talk about that, maybe right above this sentence: 'Now to
touch on the "content separated from presentation"'.
Also, have you seen this article:
http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2001/08/21/templating.html
Different language, but same issues :)
To all who have worked on smarty, thanks!!
