Change the $filename variable to the path and filename of your template
file:

$filename = "templates/index.tpl";
$smarty->assign('filemodified', date ("F d Y H:i:s.",
filemtime($filename)));
------ END PHP CODE ---------
----- BEGIN TEMPLATE CODE -----
File last modified on {$filemodified}
----- END TEMPLATE CODE ------
