So I tried that... I added:
curl.cainfo = /etc/ssl/curl.cacert.pem
into my php.ini file, restarted the server, put the recommended pem file in that location and still
the same error.
Any other idea?

It seems your certificates are not available to curl for verification.
See about configuring your php.ini to contain this information

And download latest version of certs from here:
