I had a similar problem, curl does authentication on certificates and mine failed (they're on testing boxes). To stop curl from authorizing, you need to add to SOAP/Transport/HTTP.php at line 364:
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST, 0);
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, 0);
Ofcourse you may have a totally different problem!
