Changing session.save_path outside of php.ini?

Is there any way to change session.save_path outside of the PHP.ini,
eg via the .htaccess file? When I try this:
<DIRECTORY /home/mckenna/public_html/session>
php_session.save_path = "./sesstemp"
</DIRECTORY>
Apache returns saying there's a misconfiguration. Has PHP4 removed
this useful feature?
