It's obvious that there are too many differences between php4 and 3. The
class packages are quite complex bits of code, and from what I see pretty
well written. I struggled for two days with trying to modify them here and
there to make them php4 complient. It seems to me that this is fundamentally
wrong. There is an aweful lot of code out there, far more complex than
anything I can write, and if a new installation of the engine - php4 -
breaks this code, and forces massive rewrites, then something needs to be
addressed here. After all, what makes software 'useable' is its
backward-compatability'ness. Now I know this can only go so far, but a
class+code that works fine in php3 _should_ work fine in php4. It is after
all an interpereted language, so structures should remain the same no?
Just something to consider when making the change to php4....
I personally will wait until the new version stabilises a bit more, and try
again. Meantime, php3 does an excellent job, and adopting the old adage, "If
it aint broke, don't fix it" I'll leave it in place.
Thanks to all thos kind souls who offered help in solving the problems. As I
say, graduating to php4 should not necessitate a complete rewrite of already
functional code though.
cheers
Robert
