Docs for writing installable functions/modules?

We are trying to write a set of C functions that can be installed
in php4. These functions need to have access to php variables
and other state, and construct PHP objects to be returned, etc.
Are there any good docs/examples for doing this? What is the best way to
learn how to write such a module? I know php4 supports some kind of
installable module, but I haven't been able to find any docs on this.
Pardon me if this has already been discussed on this list, I've
looked a bit and not found this info.
Any pointers to information along these lines would be very helpful.
