While rpms do make it a little easier, it tends to rob you of flexibility
when installing packages.
Installing php from source is very easy, especially on Linux.
The install and support documentation is excellent.
Give it a go. You'll be surprised at how easy it is.
If you run into problems, the php faq and list archives
can usually provide solutions quickly.
