You did it just right, if you compiled it as a module.
If you intend to use it as you described above then
`make clean' and configure it again but w/o --with-apache
or apxs or any other web server.It will compile a php binary.
Then you can write
#!/usr/local/bin/php
<?php //stuff ?>
and make it executable and it will work better than perl :-P
