Thanks to those who replied. Some replies referred me to the manual,
which I had in fact read just before posting and failed to understand.

Next time I want to comment out a PHP-HTML-PHP
transition, I'll use /* ... */.

It seems that the "?>" on the third line took precedence over the comment character.
