Im not sure if this is the correct list for this question, but i could find no better :) Ive just tried the newly released zend-optimizer engine, and i must say im very disapointed. Instead of the promised 40%-100% improvement, ive gotten a 20% performance -drop- ... I have to admin the test situation i test this on is quite insane, its a content/application engine, that used multiple levels of nested templates, tons of dynamicly loaded php files (aka modules), and many many other dynamic envirioment building functions. But my database is not my bottleneck, that machine has 65% CPU idle time while testing with 50 concurent connections, whilst the web server (dual p3 600/512mb ram/raid0) is stuck on 0% idle cpu while testing. The bottleneck is thus clearly in the speed zend can pump out data, and do all its function&envirioment assesments. Using this test situation, ive compiled a -clean- apache 1.3.12 + php-4b4pl1 (as directed by the FAQ) with this command line: ./configure --with-apache=../apache_1.3.12 --with-gd --with-ttf --with-mysql --enable-inline-optimization --with-ftp --disable-debug Not a lot that can go wrong there right? a typicale KISS (keep it simple sucker/stupid/silly) config ... then i enable the zend engine in the php.ini (as directed by its FAQ), run the test, and get 8.40 viewings per second prossed. (checked in phpinfo(), the optimizer engine is enabled)), then i disable the engine (comment out the 2 lines), restart apache, do the -same- test and get 10.80 viewings a second ... this is a roughly 20% drop in performance... Somehow this isnt all as exciting as i was hoping for :) -- Chris Chabot
