I've got php3 and php4 (b4pl1) with Apache v1.3.11 all running on my system
fine. I've haven't come across any problems yet.
First, install them into two different dir's, then use the following lines
(I'm assuming you're using apache. if not, look up your instructions on how
to set up your server):
ScriptAlias /php3/ "c:/php3/"
ScriptAlias /php4/ "c:/php4/"
AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3 .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php4 .php4
Action application/x-httpd-php3 "/php3/php.exe"
Action application/x-httpd-php4 "/php4/php.exe"
I don't think any other special measures need to be taken. The ini files are
named differently, so that's not a problem, and providing you distinguish
between the extensions and the programs, like above, they'll run
independently.
