Cookies/Session Problems

Along with my other session problems, I am running into a problem where session cookies aren't
set to expire on
client machines for 8.5 hours. Obviously this is wrong, as in the php.ini file, they are set to
expire after 30 minutes.
When setting cookies from a java servlet (session or otherwise), they expire properly. What is wrong
with PHP?
