Include generates a parse error

I'm not on the list so please reply privately...
I have several files that have a:
<?php include "file.inc"; ?>
at the end. All work fine instead of one which generates a parse error on
that line... If I move the code around a bit, the line number of the parse
error increments as I move the closing ?> but not if I move other lines
around so that seems to be the offending bit...
Any ideas? I can't get it...
