Zend hash functions

Ive looked around and there are functions for adding values to
the hash list with index keys and string keys but no functions
for adding a string key value and getting back the index key
which is much easier to work with then haveing to save the
string key when you want to look for it.
Is there some way to add values useing string key and getting
the index key of that?
