PHP can definately be used as a shell scripting language. You can read
details in an article I've recently written for PHPBuilder.com at

Hey all :)
A fast question....
We are thinking of using PHP4 for a project here, the choices being PHP4 and
Perl5/mod_perl/velocigen. Now, Choosing between them is my problem, so I
won't do a relative language thread here.
BUT - in addition to the web side scripting there is a lot of offline
(batch) processing work for us to do, and it is a little harder for us to
see PHP4 int hat role - only because there is little information for that
usage.
THE QUESTION - does zend/php4 have a command line version? Or is it all just
convincing the php4 versiont to run? Will the zend optimizer work on command
line stuff as well?
I saw a previous post re: Php as a shell app, but saw no real answers, did I
miss it? is there a big honking section fo the manual I don't see :) ?
