GD 1.8.1/PHP RC1

I recently saw on the php.net site that support was added to PHP 4 RC1 for jpeg images in the GD library. I have been trying for about 10 hours now to make it work and cannot. specifically ImageCreateFromJpeg & ImageJpeg. here are the steps i have followed or done below: * Was using gd 1.3, downloaded, compiled and installed GD 1.8.1 * downloaded and install libjpeg, libpng and zlib as per GD instructions. not sure if any of these have to be done in a certain order however * installed php RC 1 with configure command line: ./configure --with-apache=/usr/local/apache --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --enable-track-vars --enable-magic-quotes --with-imap --with-oracle=/home/oracle --with-gd=/usr/src/gd-1.8. --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/src/jpeg-6b --with-zlib-dir=/usr/src/zlib-1.1.3 During the running of configure, it says it checks for ImageCreateFromJpeg and then says "no". grrrrr, i tested gd with a little c program and it works fine with the jpegs. * rebuilt apache can anyone see anything i am missing?
