Ok, here's the tail end of config.log:

configure: failed program was:
#line 19573 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
/* Override any gcc2 internal prototype to avoid an error. */
/* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2
builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */
char gzgets();
int main() {
gzgets()

Now, I'm not really a C programmer, but it looks like problems with gd are
causing a false positive here. But the same machine with the same config
doesn't throw this error with beta3. But I do get it with beta4.
Here's the snipet from config.log for the beta3 build:
configure:13229: checking whether to include YP support
configure:13283: checking whether to include zlib support
configure:13310: checking for gzgets in -lz
configure:13329: gcc -o conftest -g -O2
conftest.c -lz -ldl -lm -lresolv 1>&5
configure:13613: checking host system type
so, maybe the problem is trying to link in the gd library for the zlib
tests?
