Using PHP4.0RC1, we've discovered a pretty reliable way to kill off an
apache child process by adding a single space to a program. The magic is in
where the space gets added: Between the . and = of the concatenation
operator.
I tried to create from scratch a test file which would reduce the bug to its
simplest case and failed; I always got a parse error. However, whenever I go
into any program of reasonable complexity and change '.=' to '. =', it's
sure to die. IE and Netscape immediately report inability to access the
page, Lynx reports "unexpected network read error", and the log shows a
segmentation fault.
If anyone is having trouble reproducing this, I can set up an example on our
web server and email a copy of the code that generates it (these files are
all quite long so I'll spare the list).
