php4 and mysql

Installed apache 1.3.12 with mod-so, then php snapshot 200004141345 using --with-apxs. Had that working. Then installed mysql with --prefix=/web/mysql-3.22.32. Symlinked that to /web/mysql for cleanliness. That install seems okay too (runs and works with command-line access). Remade php4, adding one config: --with-mysql=/web/mysql "make" and "make install" appear to go okay. However, apache cannot start now, with a complaint that libmysqlclient.so is not found. An ldd of the new apache/libexec/libphp4.so contains the line (among others): libmysqlclient.so.6 => (file not found) I see no errors in the php "make" output. The libtool line for libphp4.la includes, among other things (whole line at end of message): -L/web/mysql/lib/mysql (which is the directory where libmysqlclient.so.6 is) -R /web/mysql/lib/mysql ext/mysql/libmysql.la -lmysqlclient and there are no complaints. Is this the right place to look? Is this where libphp4.so is created? So I believe the problem is not that apache doesn't have permission to find the libmysqlclient file (in fact, the path to it appears read/executable by the world). Am I right in thinking the library itself is not being correctly? It's not an apache problem, is it? Am I looking in the right places for clues, or do any of you have some other suggested place to look? Thanks much.
