Hello Alan,

Because using auto-incremented fields is not the end in itself, but rather
a means to get a sequential unique integer value that will be used as key
in one or more tables. Other DBMS like Oracle, PostgreSQL and others use
sequences to achieve this.
So, it's more logical and objective to abstract sequences portably than to
abstract auto_increment fields that not only are not supported at all in
several important DBMS, but also impose some requirements on the fields on
which they are set.
