The quoted change should be reverted.
Instead,
if test -n "$2"; then
$3="[$]$3 -R$2 -L$2"
fi
$3="[$]$3 -l$1"
should become
if test -n "$2"; then
$3="-R$2 -L$2 -l$1 [$]$3"
else
$3="-l$1 [$]$3"
fi
