gcc comes with C++ right.
I tried several LD options but I can't seem to get it to find
/usr/local/include.

/usr/local/include/g++/iostream.h

Sorry, but PHP requires a standardized iostream implementation in threaded
mode. The C++ compiler shipped with older Sun WorkShops does not have
that. You can either upgrade to a newer version or use gcc.
