The users retain the advantage of shared libraries: You do not need to
relink your binaries, when a new version of a library is released (sharing
text pages was invented before shared libraries were born).
Remember that while PIC saves some memory, it causes a slow down of ~30%.
In contrast, the impact of --enable-debug is said to be around 5%..
