Okay, I've figured it out. PHP was insisting on using libtool 1.3.4 while
the installed version was 1.3.3. I simply symlinked /usr/bin/libtool to
php-4.0.0/libtool and rebuilt and it worked fine.
I don't know why that should happen, but I figured I might as well present
my solution for posterity.
