Hi!
on PDFLib's site, the Features page claims TIF support, but I couldn't find
a function in PHP that would work with TIFs. Is it just missing
documentation or is it really not implemented?
Anyway, my problem is this:
Our company has a bunch of large (300dpi) G3/G4-compressed TIFF scans (of A4
and A3 sheets) on a server. We're expanding the user base for our system and
it would be really impractical trying to explain to everybody where to
get/how to install/etc a TIFF viewer.
Since PDF supports TIFFs, and since it adds very little to the file length
(tests showed about 1-2k file-length increase), we've decided to offer these
scans in PDF format, since it is much more readily available on users'
systems. But, we've not found a tool yet, that would allow this simple
conversion. (the file-length test was done using the scanner's library;
however, most (like 99.99%) of these documents are no longer available for
rescanning).
ImageMagick does convert the image, but it uncompresses it, which obviously
leads to very large files (about 2MB, instead of ~80k compressed).
While manually converting the files (using Acrobat and printing stuff file
by file) works much better, there are about 300,000 of these images, so it's
not really practical. We also wish to do the conversion on the fly, since we
don't wish to double our disk size to store essentially the same data twice.
So, if any of you has any ideas on how to approach this problem, I would
most certainly appreciate it.
thanks,
Mitja
