What about giving AC_ADD_* an extra parameter that is the variable to use
instead of INCLUDES. Something like this could be used:
if test "x$2" = "x"; then
INCLUDES="$INCLUDES -I$ai_p"
else
eval "$2='\$$2 -I$ai_p'"
fi
