Aw! It'll be a pity if we don't see this in PHP4.0... It would be nice to be able to
protect certain variables within a class and force the use of get & set methods as with many
other OO languages.. stops me from making stupid coding errors too :-)

This can be annoying but at the same time, it's completely unambiguous.
So what's new in PHP5? ;-)
