Problems installing freetype support

I'm trying to install PHP4.0b2 (have also tried the latest CVS) with GD 1.3 and Freetype 1.2. The configure script seems to find all relative headers and libraries. php_config.h also indicates that everything was found. Compile goes without any problems or errors, but the finished apache binary does not have freetype support.
