dbmopen undefined?

Hi all,
I'm just checking out php4 for the first time. After successfully compiling
php4 (a bit of a task), I discovered I was unable to run some php3 scripts.
In particular I'm stuck on the dbmopen(). I get the error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: dbmopen() in ...
Yet the same php script works fine in php3 and I did configure php with:
--with-ndbm
and configure did report:
checking for dbm_open in -lc... (cached) yes
checking for NDBM support... yes
So it should at least be defined, yes?
Solaris 2.7, php4.0b2 (not the cvs version)
