For what you need may be you would like to try the PHP class available
below without needing to bloating PHP built-in functions.
http://phpclasses.UpperDesign.com/browse.html?package=1
It provides a means of not only validating form fields on the server side
with PHP but also generates HTML code with embedded Javascript code that
validates the form fields on the client side and prevents the form from
being submitted and shows a warning message if the fields do not have
valid values.
It supports some built-in validation types that are frequently requested
like e-mail addresses and credit card numbers.
Other validation types can be implemented with developer defined regular
expressions or custom validation functions. That would do to validate your
phone, zip code and contry code fields that are not supported built-in the
class because they are country specific.
