Before you build try:
mkdir ~/tmp
setenv TMPDIR ~/tmp
This might put temporary files in ~/tmp instead of /tmp
I'm not sure it works with gcc but it works on SGI's :)

I successfully made php4, and have a working httpd binary, but I accidently left out mysql support. When I tried to re-configure/build php, I get an error from ar regarding no space left on device, but df shows otherwise (1.8GB on the partition I'm building in, and 8MB or so on / where tmp is) Does anyone have a solution?
