Status of regular expressions?

Hi all, so, there is now the reg.c which handles the (I believe) fully POSIX compliant regular expressions and the pcre module which handle the Perl compatible regexs... Is this going to change? Is this going to be somehow unified? Is there a performance difference between the two? Also, it's probably not a problem to have two different ways to handle regexs, but if, say, functions from different libraries are to take different types of regex patterns as their inputs, it might cause some confusion, no ?
