Sorry to many clients?

I am using php4beta2 with apache 1.3.4 and postgreSQL 6.5. After several days of working like a charm, my application send me a message like Sorry to many clients already in page.php, and the connection with the database is not done. i'm using pg_pconnect and at one 'ps aux' i can see several conections opened to the databse even nobody is doing nothing with the scripts. what i'm asking is: if i use pg_pconnect i must use it only once at the beggining and then pass in some way the link id to the rest of database driven pages? currently i use pg_pconenct in any page (I feel some way that this is not good isn't it?)
