Either
- create an external build process, i.e. setup something
like apxs which enables people to build shared modules
which are linked against an existing php4 library
- use the `global: *' approach for versioning all shared
modules during the initial compile
You seem to hint at the second approach which should be ok
for the short term. For the long term, the first option is
more viable (as a benefit you get transparent versioning).

From configure.in.in:
abs_srcdir=
(cd $srcdir; pwd)
...
VERSION_SCRIPT="-Wl,--version-script=\$(abs_srcdir)/php.map"
I don't see any compelling reason why you couldn't simply
substitute abs_srcdir directly.
